Does learning accelerate evolution?

چکیده
This paper reviews the recent progress in the investigation into how learning can effect evolutionary dynamics after a century of sharply con¤icting views. The results are signi£cant both for theoretical biologists of various stripes and for computer scientists working on computational intelligence and other subdisciplines which often rely on the transfer of biological principles to digital systems. This review will focus on interactions which accelerate (Baldwin Effect) or decelerate (Hiding Effect) evolutionary (genetic) change. Does vocal learning accelerate acoustic diversification? Evolution of contact calls in Neotropical parrots.
Learning has been traditionally thought to accelerate the evolutionary change of behavioural traits. We evaluated the evolutionary rate of learned vocalizations and the interplay of morphology and ecology in the evolution of these signals. We examined contact calls of 51 species of Neotropical parrots from the tribe Arini. Parrots are ideal subjects due to their wide range of body sizes and hab...
متن کاملDistributed Representations Accelerate Evolution of Adaptive Behaviours
Animals with rudimentary innate abilities require substantial learning to transform those abilities into useful skills, where a skill can be considered as a set of sensory-motor associations. Using linear neural network models, it is proved that if skills are stored as distributed representations, then within-lifetime learning of part of a skill can induce automatic learning of the remaining pa...
متن کاملMulti-objective Differential Evolution for the Flow shop Scheduling Problem with a Modified Learning Effect
This paper proposes an effective multi-objective differential evolution algorithm (MDES) to solve a permutation flow shop scheduling problem (PFSSP) with modified Dejong's learning effect. The proposed algorithm combines the basic differential evolution (DE) with local search and borrows the selection operator from NSGA-II to improve the general performance. First the problem is encoded with a...
متن کاملUndermining the Baldwin expediting effect: does phenotypic plasticity accelerate evolution?
The claim that phenotypic plasticity speeds up evolution towards a target phenotype is a recent incarnation of the Baldwin effect. To differentiate this theory from earlier interpretations of Baldwin's ideas, we name it the Baldwin expediting effect. Models that demonstrate this effect assume an extreme fitness scenario which bestows high fitness upon a single optimal phenotype and treats all o...
متن کاملThe Influence of Learning on Evolution: A Mathematical Framework
The Baldwin effect can be observed if phenotypic learning influences the evolutionary fitness of individuals, which can in turn accelerate or decelerate evolutionary change. Evidence for both learning-induced acceleration and deceleration can be found in the literature. Although the results for both outcomes were supported by specific mathematical or simulation models, no general predictions ha...
